adam

Block-chunk ice threatened Adam with eternal imprisonment. Each biting step, he sank into the frozen thicket. Zsita howled and whistled in his ears, begging him to turn around. Bitter white flurries obscured his view. The skin on his cheeks was ravaged so viciously by the relentless gusts, it was all but burnt off. He adjusted his goggles and pressed on, believing this was the only way to save them all.

Traits that could rescue him from the freezing hell were forsaken for possibility because the Iksha could be watching him right now, examining his every move, and he’d decided it was wisest to present himself as Dylan. No one knew Dylan was gone except the Descendants at Meridian.

Endurance was a must, and failure was nonexistent. Oddly, the piercing pain didn’t deter him from taking another step forward. It inspired him not to turn back. He refused to waste the remainder of his life battling for his birthright to peacefully exist, living on the edge of fear, accepting that any second of any day some stranger may snatch a loved one from him.

He didn’t know or care why his ancestors never had before, but today he was fearlessly crossing the line, and walking into the unknown, believing he’d walk out, into his wife’s arms.

When he approached the facility, he remained cloaked by the thicket, watching Iksha militants and Descendant captives scurry about. He sucked in several breaths before ensuring his cloak was intact. He then activated his aero-invisibility, marched right to the main door, and walked in behind a militant. When the huge metal door whooshed closed, the militant suspiciously gazed around, as if he sensed Adam’s presence behind him.

Adam wasted no time casing the facility. He eyed Descendant captives slave away while enduring abuse. Their eyes were hollow, and they were severely underweight. Most had mangled matted hair, and were dressed in heavily soiled, ripped, beige rags, while a few others were visibly clean, with fresh garments, and brushed tresses.

He bent several corners before a slight change in core vibration captured his attention. He scanned the room until he located the source. There she was, Alexandra, his bio-mom, tall and graceful, even under the horrible conditions. He knew it was her because he had seen her face in Dylan’s memories. Her light-brown eyes with winter-green freckles had the audacity to sparkle as she spoke to a fellow captive she called Ulyana. Her long blonde hair was stringy, lifeless, and thinning, but brushed backward into a ponytail.

She was gaunt, but her skin was dewy, and smooth. Adam stood in awe, overwhelmed with emotions he never knew he’d have because he never thought he’d ever meet her. A cloaked figure crossed between them, temporarily blocking his view. He was so annoyed by the brief disruption that he searched for the figure’s face out of curiosity. It was none other than Vikki, disguised as a captive.

Alexandra suddenly snatched her head up and glared directly into Adam’s eyes, as if she saw him.

“Impossible,” he mumbled.
